Dental exams are a cornerstone of preventative dentistry. Preventive dental care is also fundamental to healthy relationships between patient and dentist. As a relationship-based practice, Manchester Dental welcomes new patients and their families from across West Central Georgia.
Our dentist, Dr. Abel Aguilar, takes a comprehensive approach. The health of the mouth and the health of the body are linked. Oral health both reflects and affects overall health. Dr. Aguilar will review your medical history, and our team may also ask questions about how your teeth and mouth feel. We encourage you to share any concerns that you have and welcome your questions, too!
Your mouth is a sum of its parts. During an exam, Dr. Aguilar assesses the condition of your teeth, as well as supporting tissues and structures (such as the gums and jaw joints).
We use state-of-the-art diagnostics like digital X-rays to pinpoint potential problems that cannot be seen with the eyes alone. Without this technology, problems like “hidden” decay can go undetected, and the disease progresses without treatment. A tooth may be irreversibly damaged.
Dr. Aguilar also screens for oral pre-cancers and cancers. We are looking for suspicious lumps, bumps, areas of discoloration, and other anomalies. As needed, tissue may be taken or biopsied to investigate further. Again, it is essential to tell Dr. Aguilar about any changes you may have noticed, such as frequent sore throats, hoarseness, and difficulty swallowing.
The exam is an excellent time for us to provide suggestions on effective brushing and flossing techniques, as well as good products for you to use at home.
While this generally sums up the exam portion of the routine dental check-up, no such visit would be complete without a good teeth cleaning by one of our hygienists. We use an ultrasonic scaler to gently, quickly, and effectively remove stubborn stains and plaque build-up.
