One dental implant can be used to stabilize a single replacement tooth (crown). Or, two implants may be applied to replace a few teeth as part of a dental bridge. For patients in the Manchester, Georgia, area who are missing all of their teeth, a minimal number of implants may be placed to support an upper or lower denture.
Dr. Abel Aguilar may recommend full-mouth reconstruction with implants for patients missing most or all of their teeth. Or, they may be recommended for individuals with many “failing” teeth. These teeth may be damaged beyond repair. In some cases, we can even replace the teeth during the same appointments as your extractions. We sometimes refer to this process as “immediate implants” or “teeth in a day.”
Each implant is designed to function as a tooth root. Conventional dentures and bridges replace the visible parts of the teeth. They do not replace the roots of the teeth. Once connected to the crown, bridge, or denture, implants secure the prosthetic teeth in the jawbone.
Due to this unique feature, implant-supported teeth are considered to be highly natural in appearance and feel in the mouth. They are also durable and can last a lifetime with proper care. Additionally, implants both replace teeth and keep the supportive bone in the jaw strong. The jawbone needs stimulation from the teeth to retain its density. This stimulation is restored due to how the force from behaviors such as chewing food is transferred from the crown, bridge, or denture to the implant secured in the jaw.
Destructive bone loss is stopped or avoided. Your implant teeth continue to function as designed. With traditional dentures, bone loss results in the need for relining, rebasing, and other services. These services are needed to restore the fit of the denture, which is altered as bone retreats and the structure of the face changes.
Dr. Aguilar can place a minimal number of implants – as few as four – to support all prosthetic teeth in an upper or lower denture. He can also place a provisional denture during the same visit as the removal of the remaining teeth. These immediate dentures allow you to get a jumpstart on transitioning to dentures. You never have to be seen with big gaps in your smile. Plus, they support optimal protection and healing of the gums. Permanent, perfect-fit dentures are then customized to your mouth once the swelling has gone down and tissues have healed.
